What a Claude Skill actually is
A Claude Skill is a plain markdown file that packages instructions, rules and an output format for one specific task. Install it once, inside Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, or any AI tool that accepts a system prompt, and invoke it whenever you need that deliverable.
The difference from typing a prompt is consistency. A prompt lives in your head and your memory of it decays; a skill is written down once, with every rule and edge case you've learned the hard way, and it runs the same way on your best day and your worst one.
Prompting vs. a packaged skill
"write me a BRD for this project" → generic structure, no numbering scheme, invents details you never gave it, different shape every time you ask
[paste raw workshop notes] → asks the 3 things it needs to know, numbers requirements BR-01, FR-01.1, flags assumptions instead of inventing, same structure every single run

FAQs
What exactly is a Claude Skill?
A packaged instruction set, a plain markdown file, that teaches Claude to perform one specific task the same way every time. You install the skill once instead of writing a prompt from scratch, then invoke it whenever you need that deliverable.
How is a Claude Skill different from just prompting Claude?
Prompting is one-off, so quality depends on how well you wrote the prompt that particular day. A skill encodes the rules, structure and edge cases once, and every run after that follows the same standard.
Do Claude Skills for business analysts cost extra beyond a Claude subscription?
The skills themselves are a one-time purchase from BATools.ai. You still need your own Claude account to run them; there's no additional per-use cost from BATools.ai.
